MINES ParisTech, UMR CNRS 7633

The Centre des Matériaux is a teaching and research center of MINES ParisTech whose activities are research, the valorization of this research, and training through research.

The Centre des Matériaux is also a Joint Research Unit of the  CNRS (UMR 7633), which is part of the l'Institut des Sciences de l'Ingénierie et des Systèmes, This unit is part of the Fédération Francilienne Mécanique des Matériaux, Structures, Procédés.

MINES ParisTech is a member of the Institut Mines-Télécom, a founding member of Paris Sciences et Lettres.

In partnership with ARMINES, the École des Mines is labeled as the CARNOT Institute (M.I.N.E.S).

The Center participates in several competitiveness clusters. It is integrated into networks of scientific competence such as Évry Sciences et Innovation and Teratec.

MISSIONS

The Centre des Matériaux was created in 1967 in Evry (Essonne, France) on a joint initiative of the Ecole des Mines de Paris and the aircraft engine manufacturer SNECMA (now SAFRAN group). Its workforce in 2016 is 190 people including 30 teacher-researchers, 50 ITA and 90 doctoral students.
The research activities apply to all types of materials of industrial interest and its action falls under three major missions :

• The research
  The Center des Matériaux aims to carry out scientific research of the highest international standard on topics of industrial interest. In this logic, it is a joint research unit of the CNRS (UMR 7633, INSIS Department). The fields of application range from physical properties to numerical modeling.
• Training
  This mission is manifested by the participation of scientific managers in the engineering courses of MINES ParisTech, interventions in several universities in the Paris region, at the undergraduate or master level, in the implementation of the specialized Master's degree in Design des Matériaux et des Structures
• The valorization of the results of research
  The importance of this valorisation activity is illustrated by the fact that half of the total resources result, via ARMINES, from research contracts involving French and international industrial partners.

The Center's renown has been established thanks to the complementary nature of these three missions, which has enabled it to train more than 500 engineers and doctors, most of whom are employed in industrial enterprises.

In addition, the Centre des Matériaux participates in the popularization of science and social openness activities carried out by MINES ParisTech by hosting third-level students in an observation program, and by organizing open houses for second-year classes. high school.
