AbstractThe future European EURO7 standard applicable from 2027 requires that new vehicles must comply with a maximum emission rate of fine particles during braking. Renault is working on various technical solutions, including the hardfacing of brake disc tracks, using a laser cladding process.
This process consists of integrating an abrasion-resistant material on the braking tracks by melting of a composite powder, projected using an inert gas under a laser beam. This results in a very abrasion-resistant raw disc, which must then be polished so match geometrical requirements. This technical choice is a major innovation in the automotive world, and mastering its mass is critical.
This thesis aims at better understanding the behaviour of coatings during manufacturing of discs, which must meet high requirements in customer use, such as resisting high temperatures and corrosion, and providing a good acoustic level. It is necessary to know the characteristics of the wear layer, and to control the impact of the processing parameters, in order to guarantee excellent quality control in mass production.
It will be necessary to understand the process and the behaviour of powders to define the impact of the various variable parameters on the characteristics of the part, to model this behaviour in the form of abacus or mathematical models, in order to provide process designers with tools to help them choose future technical solutions. A literature survey about the technology, as well as on the selected materials is necessary to control their behaviour in the application phase, but also in customer use under high stress (strong braking, humidity, corrosion, etc.).
The objective of the thesis is to allow the Renault PE Chassis to ensure our customers an intact braking service, with a level of particle emission in accordance with the legislation, by mastering the important parameters of the coating process. It is a subject of public health, linked to a European regulation, and which leads to the development of a real industrial innovation for a large series application.
