Abstract | Charpy impact tests are used in the nuclear industry to certify forged components. However, the results of these tests exhibit high variability in certain forging configurations, particularly for very large parts produced by Framatome. Previous studies have shown that forged steel is highly heterogeneous at the mesoscopic scale. These heterogeneities, caused by the segregation of certain alloying elements during the sequence of thermomechanical operations involved in forging, are a major source of the observed variability in impact test results. The objective of this thesis is to enable Framatome to better understand this variability through an approach that combines numerical simulation and probabilistic modelling. Artificial intelligence methods will play a key role, particularly in generating 3D mesosegregation fields from 2D observations and in accelerating finite element computations. |
